Video: How to Deep Clean a Bolt Action
Posted by DDH Staff

Hunters may have given a quick wipe down of their firearms after the '09 hunt, but guns need regular deep cleanings to function optimally. The off-season is the perfect time to give firearms the maintenance they need.

In this video, Larry Potterfield, CEO of MidwayUSA, shows how to deep clean the bolt action on a rifle.

Dramatic Photos: Bucks Lock Antlers
Posted by DDH Staff

These images apparently came out of Calhoun County. Which one was not revealed in the e-mail we received at Deer & Deer Hunting headquarters. The images, however, cannot be disputed. The bucks were eventually shot and killed.

292-Inch Nontypical Bagged in Nebraska
Posted by DDH Staff

The following article and images are courtesy of NEBRASKAland Magazine.

Wesley O’Brien, of  Lexington, Texas, killed what could be Nebraska’s next record whitetailed buck on November 14, 2009, the first day of that state’s 9-day firearm season. Preliminary measurements scored the 38-point rack at 292 7/8 gross and 281 net.

This massive and gnarly buck, taken in the southeast part of the state in Richardson County on private land, is quickly becoming one of the most talked about whitetails across the country. “It’s a remarkable deer,” said Tony Korth, a Nebraska Game and Parks Commission aquarium director and certified antler scorer.

Nebraska’s current state record for a nontypical firearm is 242 5/8, taken by Robert Snyder in 1961. O’Brien’s buck is expected to eclipse this deer and could potentially rival Nebraska’s state record buck for any weapon and the current world record for archery, Del Austin’s 1962 buck nicknamed “Old Mossy Horns” that scored 279 7/8.

O’Brien’s buck was shot with a .270 Weatherby Magnum a few minutes before the end of legal shooting time. He and two hunting partners, Brandon Rhodus of Lexington, Texas, and Dave Haveman of Louisville, Nebraska, were scouting for Sunday’s hunt when they saw the buck about 250 yards away.

O’Brien worked his way through a patch of timber to get a shot within 100 yards. The deer ran 30 yards and dropped. “I’m just lucky,” he said. “A good hunter doesn’t kill that deer. A lucky one does.”

Sheboygan Buck Not a World Record
Posted by DDH Staff

Claims that a buck shot near Sheboygan, Wis., is a world record are unfounded, says Deer & Deer Hunting Editor Dan Schmidt. Although impressive, the buck (which can be seen here) will not score 217 5/8 as asserted by the hunter who shot it.

"Although this Sheboygan Falls, Wis., buck is incredibly massive, we highly doubt it will live up to what early reports claim to be a 230-class nontypical and/or a 218-inch typical," Schmidt said.

"It appears to us that the buck’s rack will be subject to large deductions from at least one common base, possibly two, and major side-to-side differences.

"In any event, the hunter who shot this buck should not let those differences detract from taking such a fine whitetail."

Congratulations to him from the entire D&DH staff!

Buck Killed in Staff Food Plot
Posted by DDH Staff

The staff food plot produced another memorable moment when friend Jennifer Bates killed her very first buck with a bow. She made a perfect shot as the buck fed just 5 yards from her stand. Congratulations Jennifer!

The Staff Food Plot Hunt
Posted by DDH Staff

On Oct. 27, D&DH managing editor Jake Edson returned to the staff food plot with designer Dusty Reid and a video camera. The pair watched as a breeding frenzy exploded in the woods around the plot.

Up to eight bucks converged on a doe that must be coming very close to estrus. Then, one large-bodied 3-year-old staked a claim to the food plot, centering himself in the field and snort-wheezing every few minutes to assert his status.

Unfortunately, the only buck that came in range of Reid's bow was a 2-year-old. With breeding activity ramping up, the duo plan to spend a lot more time around the plot this week.

Here's that 2-yo they saw last night.

Photo: 11 Year Old Kills First Buck
Posted by DDH Staff

Samantha P. killed her first buck this season in Ohio with a crossbow. The burgeoning hunter is only 11 years old, so this surely isn't her last buck. She gets big thumbs up from everyone at D&DH.
