Food Plot Update: Growing 1/2-Inch Per Day

Our Frigid Forage late season plot is really starting to take off.
After below average rainfall in July, August has provided near-perfect weather for growing wildlife food. The Big-N-Beasty Brassica mix is growing nearly 1/2 inch a day right now. Plus, the chicory and clover on our larger destination plots are already being utilized heavily by deer.
A bachelor group of bucks is hitting the chicory every night now and posing for our trail cameras. Two of the bucks are 8-point 2-year-olds and one is a tall-tined 8-point 3-year old. The group also contains several yearlings.

D&DH Field Editor Takes Top Honor

The Professional Outdoor Media Association presented on Friday evening this year’s 2009 Pinnacle Award for magazine category to Richard G. Bernier for his articled titled, "Do I Have What It Takes? – A Boy, A Buck and A Step Toward Manhood."
As this year’s Honoree, Bernier received POMA’S handsome slate award and a check for $800.00.
Tack Robinson of Mossy Oak made the presentations during the NRA sponsored dinner.
"Mossy Oak is deeply committed to POMA and the Pinnacle Awards," Robinson explained during the awards presentation. "Traditional outdoor sports writers, illustrators and broadcasters are the lifeblood of the outdoor industry. Through their voices, they engage their audiences, excite and encourage them, and teach them how to hunt, fish, shoot, trap and simply get outdoors.
"Mossy Oak is proud to be the title partner in a program that honors those who excel at their craft and who also believe in and defend the outdoor lifestyle that means so much to all of us."
The POMA Pinnacle Awards honor journalists annually for exceptional journalistic achievement in traditional outdoor sports-focused writing, photography/illustration and broadcasting.
During the conference, Mossy Oak also committed to working with POMA as the title partner of the POMA Pinnacle Awards for many years to come. Together, Mossy Oak and POMA plan to grow the awards and their outreach - to augment the award's reputation as the most prestigious honor an outdoor industry journalist can receive.

Speaking of D&DH's managing editor, Edson snapped these photos (above) in the chicory he and others planted earlier this year. The chicory's success has been overwhelming, nearly choking out the clover planted alongside it.
All that hard work is paying off. With any luck, this buck isn't just passing through.

Video: Two Fighting Does

Loyal Deer & Deer Hunting reader Wallace M., of southeast Pennsylvania, shot this footage of two does fighting. Apparently, this is not an uncommon sight for Wallace. He's right in the middle of a deer hotspot
Writes Wallace, "I have been taking video of deer in the same square mile since 1987. I live on a 17-acre spread with wooded hills and grown up fields, all next to corn, alfalfa, soy beans and the like. I see deer all the time."

Food Plot Update: Chicory Explodes

After planting our late season food plot with a Frigid Forage brassica mix last week, I'm getting extremely excited for the season.
We have stands hung on that plot and the large destination plots we planted earlier this spring. While the fall plot is just starting to sprout, those early plots are doing really well -- especially the chicory in the mix!
And the deer are hitting the chicory pretty hard right now. So far we've done one mowing to keep the weeds back, but now the deer are taking over that chore.
According to Whitetail Institute, a chicory and clover mix can be great for areas that experience high summer heat and summer drought, which can slow clover production.
While we haven't had the heat this summer, at one point we were nearly 6 inches below average on rainfall. This is one reason it's wise to use a seed blend. You never know what weather the coming year holds.

Food Plot Update: Perfect Timing?

Wow. My timing is never this great. Last night, my hunting partners and I
planted our late season hunting plot with Frigid Forage Big-N-Beasty
Brassica mix. It started raining at midnight and hasn't stopped for the past
14 hours.
According to Frigid Forage's John Barsody, precipitation is even more
important than timing in late-season plot success.
If rain is in the forecast, even if you have to push your time-table up a
week or two, get that seed in the ground.

It was taken by a trail camera in North Carolina on one of my hunting properties this summer. I recognize most of the bucks from last year with a few new faces. Needless to say they will all get to walk this year.

Bachelor Group Invokes Thoughts of Opening Day

This photo of a bachelor group was taken somewhere in central Wisconsin. According to confidential sources, the photographer spotted the group from the road, drove down a neighbor's driveway, got out of the car and shot the photo. The group was very cooperative in front of the camera.
But will they remain so approachable when opening day begins?

Check out the head gear. Now that's a crown.
They figure he'll only end up scoring around 450-470. Won't make 500", but still will beat 436 which is Rolex, the current biggest deer in the world. Poor deer.
