Bachelor Group Invokes Thoughts of Opening Day
Posted by DDH Staff

This photo of a bachelor group was taken somewhere in central Wisconsin. According to confidential sources, the photographer spotted the group from the road, drove down a neighbor's driveway, got out of the car and shot the photo. The group was very cooperative in front of the camera.

But will they remain so approachable when opening day begins?

Photo: Buck Scores 450
Posted by DDH Staff

Check out the head gear. Now that's a crown.

They figure he'll only end up scoring around 450-470. Won't make 500", but still will beat 436 which is Rolex, the current biggest deer in the world. Poor deer.

Ghost Deer Caught on Camera?
Posted by DDH Staff

Things mysterious are haunting the farm fields near Independence, Iowa. Some say they are the deer of Harvests Past back to inflict the kind of terror only an ungulate can dish. Others say the supernatural beings aren't so much super as natural, albeit rare. Albino deer, they say, are hardly ghosts.

All we have as evidence is this fuzzy photograph taken by Kade H., a loyal Deer & Deer Hunting subscriber and haphazard cryptozoologist. See for yourself.

Two Promising Bucks
Posted by DDH Staff

by Jacob Edson, managing editor

Check out these two deer that my cousin photographed in her back yard. Talk about potential. Sadly, these boys live in town and I’ll never get a chance at them. Hopefully she can keep tabs on them the next few years. I can’t wait to see how they age.

Time to Spray Food Plots
Posted by DDH Staff

by Jacob Edson, managing editor

July is quickly rolling by and it's time to start preparing for late-season
food plots...If you haven't already.

This week, my hunting partner and I sprayed our late-season kill plot to
prepare it for planting soon. The field had been tilled in late May, and the
weeds had reclaimed the plot.

According to John Barsody, of Frigid Forage, late-season spraying can be a
great method to eliminate warm weather weeds from late-season annual
plantings.

"It's a good idea to till late season plots early on," Barsody explained.

"Then let them green up before spraying them in midsummer. Every time you till you help re-germinate some of those seeds. Plus, warm season seeds like milkweed and thistle don't germinate until later and won't be killed by spraying in May and June, because Roundup only kills green plants."

We'll give the plot two weeks and then till it the last week in July and
hope for rain. The plan is to have the field 100 percent ready to plant as
soon as we see rain in the forecast beginning with the last week of July.
Stay tuned for more tips and updates.

"I have seen him just about everyday for the last month or so," wrote Chris. "I believe he is a 3 year old buck."

Staff Food Plot Already Attracting
Posted by DDH Staff

by Jacob Edson, F&W Media Outdoors Editor

Well, our new food plot is already attracting deer. Young tender shoots are
preferred by whitetails, and you can see in this photo the pre-existing
chicory in the foreground and our new clover mix in the back.

As a side note, this photo was taken with the new Bushnell Trophy Cam. Its tiny size boasts a year of battery life from eight AA batteries!
