Doe with Attached Antlers Fails to Fool Authorities
Posted by DDH Staff

Source: Burlington Free Press

A 10-point antler rack, bolted and glued to the head of a slain doe last fall, raised the blaze-orange flag of state game wardens.

But ultimately it was poor sportsmanship -- not his skill with hand tools -- that nailed Marcel Fournier, 19, of Concord in the prosecution's case.

The Vermont State's Attorney Office released documents Thursday that show that, over the course of several months, Fournier illegally hunted does and at least one immature buck, using his Jeep's headlights to spot (or "jack") his quarry.

Fournier's amateur taxidermy, documented in a trophy Polaroid photograph and in Vermont District Court records, put authorities on the trail. His game violations cost Fournier $400 in fines and a 10-day jail term, levied Feb. 18.

Man Pays for Transporting Deer to South Carolina
Posted by DDH Staff

Source: thedigitel.com

James Schaffer of Charleston has paid out hundreds of thousands of dollars after he pleaded guilty to illegally importing 54 deer in to South Carolina back in 2005.

Our state prohibits the importation of deer largely out of fear of disease transmission, particularly Chronic Wasting Disease.

Here’s the whole e-mailed press release:

A three year investigation by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) involving the illegal importation of white-tailed deer into South Carolina has lead to the indictment of individuals in multiple states. According to documents filed in the District Court of the Southern District of Ohio, individuals from South Carolina conspired with individuals from Ohio and elsewhere to illegally import 54 white-tailed deer into South Carolina in late 2005.

Fawn Follows Dog Into House
Posted by DDH Staff

This came as part of one of those chain e-mails, so I won't gag you with the fluffy details. Suffice to say a fawn followed this beagle into a house, where they nested upon a floral print.

It's cute and all, but if it was the other way around – the dog followed the deer around outside – and it happened in Minnesota, the person shooting the camera would have had to shoot something else.

That's only in theory, though. For now, step back and let out an "Awwww fer cute."

Twenty-Three Sportsman's Warehouses Close
Posted by DDH Staff

Source: local8news.com

POCATELLO - Sportsman's Warehouse in Pocatello will be closing within the next couple of months, confirmed the store's owner, Stu Utgaard, Monday.

He said the credit markets have made it difficult to continue doing business. He jokingly said, "We didn't get our share of the stimulus."

But on a more serious note, Utgaard said banks effectively put them out of business.

Within the next two to three months, the store will liquidate its inventory.

The Pocatello store is just one of 23 stores nationwide that will be closing. A majority of the stores closing are located in the east. There are a total of 67 Sportman's in the country.

Barrel Stuck in Antlers

The pictures speak for themselves. Bet this buck cannot wait to shed. Never mind the time stamp. This is not an example of time travel. There must have been a malfunction on the camera.

Deer vs. Restaurant
Posted by DDH Staff

Source: News8.net

SILVER SPRING, Md. - A local neighborhood was shocked Thursday afternoon after Montgomery County (web | news) police say a deer ran through a restaurant and a Giant Food store in Silver Spring.

At the Greek Village restaurant, owner George Bourzikos watched as a deer being chased by two dogs crashed through the front window. The animal's force shattered glass and sent customers and employees scrambling for safety.

In the 40 years Bourzikos has been in the restaurant business, he says he's never seen a deer crash through his window with two dogs in hot pursuit.

"The table and the chairs -- they [were] all down," Bourzikos said. "Some [people were] scared. I grabbed one chair to protect myself," he said.

Are Today's Hunters Spoiled Rotten?
Posted by DDH Staff

by Daniel E. Schmidt, editor

So there I sat, sipping a Diet Mountain dew while perusing the daily deer
news. As the editor of D&DH, I get many, sometimes dozens, of emails every
day from deer hunters from across the country.

One of the emails I opened yesterday afternoon included a video clip to a
local newscast here in northeast Wisconsin. The headline, "Hunters Sound Off
Over Small Deer Harvest." I clicked on the link and proceeded to watch the TV clip.

It took less than two minutes for me to laugh so hard that my nostrils are
still burning from the Mountain Dew sting.

One of the people interviewed for this story was a 14-year-old boy who had
showed up for an informational meeting. His quote, "I think the DNR just doesn't know how many deer are around, they don't drive around like we do, they don't hunt as hard as we do, cause there aren't any deer."

Said a veteran hunter, "I couldn't even fill my tag with a doe. They have to admit (there aren't that many deer) somewhere along the line, otherwise they're going to lose licenses, kids aren't going to buy licenses."

Oh my, how times have changed. Or have they?

In 2008, Wisconsin hunters harvested 452,000+ deer during its gun and bow
seasons. The final number will rank this season among the Top 30 all time in
the history of our country's modern deer seasons. Need more perspective?
That would be Top 30 in more than 1,680 reported deer seasons for the 42
states with huntable whitetail populations.

I'm only 42 years old, but I guess that qualifies me as a veteran these
days. And, yes, I'm quite depressed right now as I reminisce to the "old
days" when I was in college. But, for some more perspective, that would take
us way back (yes, more sarcasm) to the mid-1980s. Back then, which many
Wisconsin hunters amazingly refer to as the "good, old days," state hunters
killed, on average, 218,000 deer per year.

The fact that we are killing more than twice as many deer in
2009 than we did during the good, old days surely indicates the DNR doesn't
know what it's doing.

Sorry for the sarcasm, but this one just calls for it. Please note that my comments aren't aimed at any individuals. My point is simply to note how indeed our times have changed.
