Would you Deer Hunt with an AR?
Posted by DDH Staff

On Friday, Remington announced the release of the Model R-25, a modular repeating rifle designed for big game hunters. The AR-style rifle is available in .243 Win., 7mm-08 Remington and .308 Win. -- three of today’s most popular short action hunting cartridges.

According to Remington, the entire rifle was designed with big game hunters in mind, and includes the most advanced design aspects of 308 Win. Style AR rifles available today. The R-25 features a precision-crafted 20 inch barrel with a recessed hunting crown that’s free-floated within a machined-aluminum fore-end tube. Six longitudinal flutes forward of the gas block provide increased rigidity and weight reduction while promoting rapid barrel cooling. Each Model R-25 is completely covered in Mossy Oak Treestand camouflage.

The rifles come with a four-round magazine and are compatible with all aftermarket AR 308 Win. type magazines and accessories.

MSRP is about $1,500.

These rifles will certainly have the ballistic capability to kill deer, but I wonder how they will be received by the deer hunting community. Would you purchase one for deer hunting?

I have no problem with using an AR platform for deer hunting, but the $1,500 price tag would keep me away.

I don't think there is a chance that I'll purchase one of these so-called 'rifles.' Call me a traditionalist, but I'm not going to war with the deer. I'll stick to my traditional weaponry thank you very much!

Buckhunter21,
Aesthetics and price aside, what's the difference between these guns and a Model 750 or BAR?

I would not buy one. In fact, I would tend to go the opposite direction and buy a single shot rifle like a Ruger Number 1.
I had my share of assault rifles in the military, and I think that is where they belong.

Traditional weaponry? Uhhh, just about every gun in existence is based in a military design. These are no different. Having the attitude that these are anything other than a tool just adds more fire to anti-gun crowd's argument. If you don't like them, fine. But be smarter to just answer the question with a simple, no, I won't buy one. I love that we have the freedom in this country to say what we feel, but I als don't have to have any respect for your opinions. Think before you type.

I think the AR platform has been time tested and is a fine rifle for the field as long as the group size is around 1MOA or less and the AR is plenty capable of this. The price seems to be well in the the market average, however it is still out of my budget at this time.
God Bless,

I think the question should be about the ethical killing of the deer or big game in question. It only takes on shot to kill a deer. Last year hunting on property that was deemed over populated I killed 12 deer the leagal limit in my state. Using my 7mm BAR all deer were killed with one shot and no shots were taken at running deer. So again I think the question should be about the shot not the tool used to make the shot. Yes I have a 223 m14 use it for hunting varmits but still use good judgement when taking a shot.

remark for buckhunter 21, you asked about the difference between AR type rifles and basically all others, well here it is, pretty much no recoil. i dont know about you but i am tired of being kicked by a mule every time i take a shot.
