Would You Shoot Him?
Posted by DDH Staff

Here's another nice buck we captured on film recently. Question of the day...would you tag this buck if he walked past your stand on opening day of archery season?

He is an eight pointer so he's legal in my area. If I shoot him, then my archery season is over, except for taking a doe or two. So that's the dilemma. I think I would wait for him to turn and see what his body looks like, he appears a bit gangly from this angle so he might be fairly young. If that's the case I'd hold off and hope he makes it to next year, or hope my brother or nephew gets a crack at him. They wouldn't let him walk, but then they have not shot an antlered deer since we bought our property six years ago.

Now if it were a week or two before gun season were to start and I still hadn't filled my tag, I might make a different decision. Depends on what I have been seeing all season.

Yes.

In my archery hunting area that is a mature deer. A fine animal at that.

I just moved from PA where that would be a trophy to brag on. Having recently read, "They walk until they die!" it appears there is no "stockpiling" deer - so I would be hard pressed not to harvest venison for my smoker and enjoy the memory of a succesful hunt.

Not sure what the dilemma is here? Nice and tall G2's with respectable forks on each side. Very notable brow tines probably exceeding 4" in length. The only thing lacking would be girth, but I'm guessing it would score in the 130's, no? A shooter in my book either way!
